IMD Launches Cyclone Platform With Tracks, Rainfall And Surge Warnings

India’s weather agency has launched a public WebGIS platform combining cyclone forecasts and marine hazard information.

What happened

The India Meteorological Department dedicated its Cyclone Warning and Marine Weather Services Decision Support System during its post-monsoon cyclone preparedness meeting. The public WebGIS platform displays observed and forecast cyclone tracks and intensity, uncertainty ranges, district-level rainfall warnings, wind spread, storm-surge alerts and river-basin rainfall forecasts. It is available through IMD and regional cyclone-centre websites.

Why it matters

The platform gives disaster authorities, government agencies and the public a single visual source for assessing cyclone risks, supporting earlier preparation and more timely action.
