Northeast Banks Urged to Raise Credit Beyond 47% Deposit Deployment
Jyotiraditya Scindia urged banks to expand lending, infrastructure and financial access across the Northeast.
What happened
At Northeast Bankers’ Conclave 3.0 in Aizawl, Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said banks provide only ₹47 in credit for every ₹100 deposited across the Northeast. He called for more lending to entrepreneurs, farmers, women and MSMEs, alongside stronger physical banking networks and a region-specific credit-risk framework. Of 9,000 targeted villages, 6,905 now have banking or postal coverage.
Why it matters
Higher credit access would help convert the Northeast’s financial inclusion into economic activity, particularly for local businesses, farmers, women and infrastructure projects.
