Google Cuts Quantum Computing’s Magic-State Errors 40-Fold on Willow

Google demonstrated magic state cultivation on its Willow quantum processor, reducing errors 40-fold and achieving 99.99% logical fidelity.

What happened

Google Quantum AI demonstrated “magic state cultivation” on its Willow processor, addressing a major resource bottleneck in error-corrected quantum computing. The protocol filters noisy quantum states through coordinated measurements, producing higher-quality states for useful operations. Google reported a 40-fold error reduction versus uncultivated states and a record 99.99% logical fidelity for T-states. The results were published in Science.

Why it matters

Magic states can consume up to 95% of a quantum computer’s capacity. Reducing their error rate could lower the hardware required for practical, error-corrected quantum computing, though larger-scale demonstrations remain necessary.
