India’s August BoP Swings to $45.4 Billion Surplus on Banking Capital
India posted a preliminary $45.4 billion balance-of-payments surplus in August, reversing a $5.6 billion deficit a year earlier.
What happened
India’s current account recorded a $5.2 billion deficit in August 2026, while the capital account posted a $50.6 billion surplus. The resulting overall balance was a preliminary $45.4 billion surplus, compared with a $5.6 billion deficit in August 2025. Banking capital contributed $64.7 billion, including $83 billion in net non-resident Indian deposits.
Why it matters
Capital inflows more than covered the current-account deficit in August, with banking capital and NRI deposits providing the largest reported support to the external balance.
