Uttarakhand’s Trout Cluster Gains Push From Government Investment and Exports
A senior fisheries official reviewed Munsiyari’s trout cluster as Uttarakhand expands production, infrastructure and exports.
What happened
Fisheries Secretary Dr Abhilaksh Likhi visited Munsiyari on October 18, 2026, meeting trout farmers and reviewing the coldwater aquaculture cluster. Pithoragarh is one of 34 nationally notified fisheries clusters. The government has invested more than ₹2,299 crore under PMMSY in coldwater regions, while India’s trout production has risen sixfold to about 5,000 metric tonnes annually.
Why it matters
Trout farming is creating livelihood opportunities in Himalayan border villages, with Uttarakhand already exporting trout to Nepal and supplying the ITBP under an institutional arrangement.
