India’s ICAR develops purple potato packed with added nutrients
ICAR-CPRI has developed nutrient-rich coloured potato varieties, including the purple-fleshed Kufri Jamunia, to improve dietary nutrition.
What happened
ICAR-CPRI developed coloured potato varieties including Kufri Neelkanth, Kufri Manik and Kufri Jamunia, which contain antioxidants and micronutrients such as anthocyanins, iron and zinc. Kufri Jamunia stands out for its purple flesh and higher vitamin C, anthocyanin and carotenoid levels. It produces 10–12 medium-to-large tubers per plant and is recommended for cultivation across northern Indian plains.
Why it matters
The variety gives farmers a crop with stronger nutritional value and consumers a versatile food that can contribute to efforts against hidden hunger and improve dietary diversity.
