Google’s AI Intake Tool Gives Doctors More Time for Collaborative Care

Google researchers say AMIE can gather and summarize patient information before consultations, freeing doctors for treatment discussions.

What happened

Google’s AMIE research system conducts targeted patient conversations before appointments, gathers clinical history, and sends doctors a concise summary. In the study, a trained physician supervised every interaction and did not need to intervene. Researchers are now preparing broader controlled studies and exploring audio, video, and image-based interactions beyond AMIE’s original text chat.

Why it matters

Automating baseline information gathering can shift consultations toward patient concerns, treatment options, diagnosis, and shared decisions, according to the researchers.
