European Banks Build Proprietary AI With Open Models and Owned Data
European financial firms are deploying open-weight AI models on their own infrastructure for banking, payments and market-data workloads.
What happened
At GTC Berlin, firms including Revolut, Starling Bank, Lloyds, bunq and Santander showcased production AI systems built with open-weight models and their own data. Revolut is scaling its PRAGMA foundation model to an initial 80 million customers, with capacity engineered for three times that scale. Stripe reported 92% cost savings in offline fraud-detection testing.
Why it matters
Open-weight models let financial institutions retain control of proprietary data while managing deployment costs. Reported gains include faster processing, cheaper model responses and improved fraud-detection workflows.
