Google, Voltus expand virtual power plant to 1 GW across PJM
Google and Voltus will expand a virtual power plant across PJM to support grid reliability for 67 million people.
What happened
Google and Voltus announced an expanded agreement to build a 1-gigawatt virtual power plant across the PJM grid region, which serves 67 million people in 13 states and Washington, D.C. Voltus will aggregate flexible capacity from businesses and homes, including smart thermostats, batteries, and industrial assets. The expansion is ten times larger than their earlier 100-megawatt agreement.
Why it matters
Participating customers can receive bill savings and cash payments, while temporarily reducing energy use during peak demand supports regional grid reliability and affordability.
