RBI sets April 1, 2027 start for banks’ operational risk capital rules
RBI has set April 1, 2027, as the implementation date for revised operational risk capital requirements for commercial banks.
What happened
The Reserve Bank of India’s 2026 amendment directions set April 1, 2027, as the implementation date for the Basel III Standardised Approach to operational risk capital. The directions also provide indicative mapping of Business Indicator components to financial-statement schedules and incorporate further Basel Committee clarifications. Small finance, payments and regional rural banks are excluded.
Why it matters
Commercial banks now have a defined start date and reporting framework for the revised operational risk capital requirements, enabling preparation against the Basel III standard.
