India’s Indigenous AIP Module Moves Toward Kalvari-Class Submarine Integration

DRDO’s indigenous AIP energy module has entered Setting to Work Phase-2 ahead of planned submarine integration in 2027.

What happened

DRDO’s Naval Materials Research Laboratory opened Setting to Work Phase-2 for its indigenous air-independent propulsion energy module on October 24, 2026, at Larsen & Toubro’s Hazira facility. The module will next be activated for power generation and rigorously tested under Navy procedures before being handed to Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders in early 2027 for integration with a Kalvari-class submarine.

Why it matters

The AIP system reduces diesel-electric submarines’ dependence on atmospheric oxygen, increasing their ability to remain underwater. The milestone also advances India’s domestic submarine-propulsion capability.
