Google and Courtauld open ultra-detailed art study to global audiences

Google Arts & Culture and the Courtauld launched an online collection exploring art history through high-resolution images and research.

What happened

The new “Art of Looking” collection features 12 stories on artists, artworks and creative processes, including detailed views of works by Van Gogh and Manet. The partners also announced an artist residency examining how artificial intelligence can improve metadata workflows for cultural collections. The project builds on their 2022 partnership, which used Google’s Art Camera to capture 16 works in high detail.

Why it matters

The project gives global audiences access to detailed images and scholarship, while the AI residency aims to make the Courtauld’s photographic collections searchable and link them to learning curricula.
