Delhi Zoo walks document 47 bird and 23 odonate species
Delhi’s National Zoological Park recorded 47 bird species and 23 butterfly, dragonfly and damselfly species during citizen-led nature walks.
What happened
The National Zoological Park in New Delhi held its 15th Sunday Bird Walk and fourth Butterfly and Dragonfly Walk to involve citizens in biodiversity monitoring and wildlife conservation awareness. From 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., 15 participants, guided by bird expert Rohit Sharma and butterfly and dragonfly expert Ramvar, documented 47 bird species and observed more than 750 birds. They also recorded eight butterfly, 10 dragonfly and five damselfly species. Zoo director Sanjeet Kumar, officials and resource experts joined the activity. The zoo said its weekly walks are capped at 20-25 participants and require advance registration.
Why it matters
The observations provide field-level biodiversity information for the zoo while strengthening participants’ species-identification skills and understanding of conservation. The event also demonstrated a structured way for citizens to contribute to biodiversity documentation and awareness.
