India Starts First LNG Train, Unveils ₹1,472 Crore Railway Projects
Amit Shah launched India’s first LNG train and inaugurated railway projects worth ₹1,472 crore in Ahmedabad.
What happened
Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah launched India’s first LNG-powered train from Sabarmati railway station in Ahmedabad and inaugurated or initiated railway works valued at ₹1,472 crore. The programme included a ₹700 crore WAG-12 locomotive maintenance shed and the Kavach safety system on the Sabarmati–Kalol–Sabarmati section, costing ₹48 crore. Kavach work also began on the Ahmedabad–Palanpur and Ahmedabad–Samakhiali sections, alongside doubling of the Sabarmati–Sarkhej route. Shah said the 12,000-horsepower WAG-12 twin-section locomotive can haul roughly as much freight as 600 trucks alone.
Why it matters
The projects add locomotive maintenance capacity, rail-safety coverage and track infrastructure. The LNG train also introduces an alternative fuel for rail operations, which the government says will support environmental protection.
