MedGemma reaches Indian eye screening and AIIMS healthcare pilots
Google's open-weight MedGemma models are supporting healthcare tools in India and worldwide, including screening and triage applications.
What happened
Google says MedGemma, its open-weight family of medical AI models, has been downloaded more than 10 million times for thousands of research adaptations. In India, Visilant has screened more than 50,000 patients for cataracts and other eye conditions using smartphone imaging and is incorporating MedGemma into its workflows. At AIIMS Delhi, clinicians are piloting IndusDerma for dermatology screening and Aarogyam for outpatient triage. The models can run on devices, on-site servers or cloud infrastructure, allowing organisations to keep patient data local. Google says MedGemma supports medical text and image analysis, but requires validation before clinical use.
Why it matters
The tools could help frontline workers and crowded hospitals support triage and early screening while retaining control of sensitive patient data. At AIIMS, Aarogyam is intended to reduce pre-specialist waits and help specialists see more patients, subject to clinical validation.
