Google opens custom AI voice generation, but replication stays unavailable in India
Google launched two Gemini text-to-speech models with custom voice design, line-by-line direction and safeguards; replication excludes India.
What happened
Google introduced Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS and Gemini 3.8 Flash-Lite TTS for expressive audio generation. Flash TTS supports custom voices, voice replication, accents and dialects across more than 100 languages, while Flash-Lite targets high-volume dubbing, audio creation and voice agents. The models offer 2,000-plus production-ready voices, line-by-line performance direction, two-speaker scene staging and long-form generation. Voice replication can use a 30-second sample, but requires consent verification. Generated audio carries SynthID watermarks, with C2PA credentials also available for replicated voices. Flash TTS is rolling out through Google AI Studio and the Gemini API; replication is unavailable in India.
Why it matters
Developers and enterprises can build customised audiobooks, podcasts, dubbing and voice agents with finer control. However, users in India cannot access voice replication through AI Studio, limiting that specific capability locally.
