Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Cuts Cardiac Modeling from Hours to Seconds
CHOP uses open-source NVIDIA AI tools to create precise pediatric heart models in seconds for congenital heart care.
What happened
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia uses MONAI, an open-source medical imaging framework co-founded by NVIDIA, to create anatomically precise models of children’s hearts from CT, MRI and 3D ultrasound images. The process now takes seconds, replacing workflows that once required about four hours of skilled research work. CHOP expects to model roughly 200 cases this year, while more than 20 US children’s hospitals operate cardiac modeling programmes. Its SlicerHeart team is also working with NVIDIA and the open-source community on Newton and Warp physics simulations to predict how closure devices and future transcatheter valves will fit individual anatomies.
Why it matters
The technology moves pediatric cardiac modeling into routine clinical use and can help doctors compare device fit before procedures. Open-source collaboration also addresses a patient population too small and diverse to attract conventional commercial development.
