Google adds economists to map AI’s impact on jobs and growth

Google is expanding its AI and Economy Research Program with economists studying AI adoption, productivity, labor markets, and growth.

What happened

Google is expanding its AI and Economy Research Program with new academic advisors, visiting fellows, and research directors. Philippe Aghion, identified by Google as a 2025 Nobel Laureate in Economics, joins as an Academic Advisor, while University of Toronto professor Ajay Agrawal becomes a Visiting Fellow. Former McKinsey Global Institute partner Anu Madgavkar and Wharton professor Daniel Rock join as program directors. Their work will examine global AI diffusion, workforce changes, enterprise productivity, small businesses, scientific discovery, and AI’s role in economic growth. The program will use economic research and data, including future updates to Google’s AI and Economy ATLAS.
