UN system opens one searchable home for global statistics
The UN System Data Commons brings official statistics into one open, AI-ready platform for search, analysis and visualisation.
What happened
The UN system has launched the UN System Data Commons, an open-source platform that combines statistics from its agencies in one searchable knowledge graph. It standardises metrics, timelines and geographic boundaries across previously separate datasets, allowing users to search in natural language or browse by location and themes such as health and education. AI assistants can retrieve figures and create charts, infographics or draft reports through open standards including the Model Context Protocol. UN statisticians and technical experts validate the datasets. More sources will be added, with a goal of covering 80% of UN system statistical datasets by 2027.
Why it matters
The platform reduces the manual work analysts previously needed to reconcile fragmented UN datasets. Researchers, journalists, nonprofits and policy analysts can access official statistics and compare issues across regions and sectors in one workflow.
