Brazilian Rice Farms Get Methane Cuts and Permanent Carbon Removal
A new partnership will combine methane reduction and carbon removal across more than 200,000 hectares of Brazilian rice farms.
What happened
The partnership will purchase the elimination of 1 million metric tons of methane by 2030 and 1 million metric tons of permanent carbon removal by 2040. Farmers will adopt Alternate Wetting and Drying irrigation to reduce methane, while crushed volcanic rock will remove carbon dioxide as it weathers across more than 200,000 hectares in southern Brazil.
Why it matters
The project links immediate emissions cuts with lasting carbon removal, while reducing water use, lowering input costs, and potentially improving soil health for farmers.
