Google Sets Thompson Center for Work, Culture and Community in 2028
Google unveiled redevelopment plans for Chicago’s Thompson Center, combining new offices, public spaces, art and youth partnerships by 2028.
What happened
Google released designs for transforming the 17-story Thompson Center into a public and workplace hub, featuring an expanded atrium, grand staircase, retail and dining spaces, and a 30-foot sculpture by Sanford Biggers. The renovated building is scheduled to open to employees, tenants and the public in 2028. Google will also fund youth art and attendance programs.
Why it matters
The project expands Google’s Chicago footprint beyond offices, adding public amenities and community programmes while directing $1 million toward reducing chronic absenteeism among local students.
