FTC Tells Auto Dealers Advertised Prices Must Include Mandatory Fees
FTC guidance tells auto dealers advertised vehicle prices must include all mandatory consumer charges except government-required fees.
What happened
The Federal Trade Commission published FAQs clarifying that a vehicle’s advertised price must be the actual amount any consumer can pay, excluding only charges the government requires. The guidance covers document fees, rebates, discounts, negotiations, optional items, different advertising channels and vehicles in transit. The FTC also warned 97 auto groups earlier this year about pricing practices.
Why it matters
Dealers must make advertised prices match the amount consumers are required to pay, reducing room for undisclosed fees and misleading pricing practices.
