Google Funds Chile Canal Upgrade, Saving 1.9 Billion Gallons Annually

Google is contributing $1.2 million to line an irrigation canal in Chile and reduce annual water losses.

What happened

Google will provide $1.2 million to Aguas Andinas to help concrete-line a 2.5-kilometre section of the Unidos de Buin Canal Association’s main irrigation canal. The upgrade will reduce seepage, sedimentation and erosion, while preserving up to 7.4 million cubic metres, or 1.9 billion gallons, of water annually for local agricultural irrigation.

Why it matters

More water will remain available for agriculture in the Maipo River Basin, a vital watershed supplying Santiago, while the project also improves water quality.
