Google replaces Gemini Gems with reusable skills for repetitive work
Google is introducing reusable Gemini skills globally while phasing out Gems across personal and Workspace accounts.
What happened
Google is rolling out skills in Gemini chat globally, with Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit, and education access coming in the following weeks. Users can save instructions, trigger them with “/”, combine skills, and attach reference files. Skills replace Gems, which Google will retire from November for personal accounts and between March and June 2027 for Workspace customers, migrating existing data automatically.
Why it matters
Teams can standardise recurring drafting, presentation preparation, writing styles, and brainstorming workflows without repeating prompts, while existing Gems will transition into the new system.
