FTC, States Sue Lens.com Over Hidden Fees That Double Prices
The FTC, Utah, and Nevada allege Lens.com concealed mandatory checkout fees that routinely doubled advertised contact-lens prices.
What happened
The FTC, joined by Utah and Nevada, sued Lens.com, its owner Cary Samourkachian, and affiliate Speed Commerce over allegedly deceptive pricing. The complaint says sponsored ads and website listings showed artificially low prices, while a mandatory “Taxes & fees” charge was hidden during checkout and routinely doubled the advertised cost. The allegations also cover Lens.com’s AutoRefill subscription disclosures and cancellation terms. The case remains for the court to decide.
Why it matters
Consumers allegedly paid substantially more than advertised, while hidden charges made Lens.com’s prices difficult to compare with competitors and raised costs for a healthcare necessity.
