RBI eases KYC document certification for foreign portfolio investors
RBI has extended alternative certified-copy requirements for FPIs dealing with rural co-operative banks, effective immediately.
What happened
The Reserve Bank’s September 18, 2026 amendment extends an existing KYC facility for NRIs and PIOs to Foreign Portfolio Investors. Rural co-operative banks may now accept original certified copies from specified overseas officials, notaries, courts, or Indian missions.
Why it matters
For FPIs, this could simplify document verification when offline Aadhaar checks are unavailable, reducing reliance on in-person comparison by rural co-operative banks. The change applies immediately and broadens the accepted certification channels for overseas customers.
