Professor Replaces Coding Tests With AI-Assisted Interviews To Assess Judgment

A Malaysian lecturer uses Gemini in Colab and verbal interviews to assess how students evaluate AI-generated solutions.

What happened

A data mining lecturer at Universiti Putra, Malaysia, replaced traditional coding tests with conversations about students’ AI-assisted problem-solving. Students use Gemini in Google Colab to generate code and alternatives, then explain their choices, troubleshoot errors, and challenge recommendations. Gemini Canvas and Gemini Notebook help the lecturer evaluate this work at scale.

Why it matters

The assessment shifts emphasis from coding syntax to human judgment: selecting, questioning, and defending AI-supported modelling decisions. Students are evaluated on capability, not simply AI output.
