India’s Agriculture Ministry Sets Monthly Reviews, Launches Nationwide Soil Campaign
Agriculture officials will face monthly performance reviews as India begins a nationwide farm-protection campaign this month.
What happened
Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan directed every ministry department and mission to undergo regular monthly reviews, with financial and physical targets assigned to officials. A nationwide Khet Bachao campaign will begin on the 22nd, sending scientists and field staff to advise farmers on soil testing, residue management and balanced fertiliser use. More than 10.77 crore farmer IDs have been created.
Why it matters
The campaign directly targets soil degradation and inefficient input use, while farmer IDs are intended to route subsidies, credit, insurance and relief more transparently to bank accounts.
