Google AI Maps 45,500 Ebola Risks in Minutes, Not Weeks
Google’s Earth AI tools help public health teams identify vulnerable populations and forecast disease risks faster.
What happened
Google combined satellite imagery, mobility data, environmental signals and health information in Earth AI tools for public health use. During the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a prototype mapped 48 exposed settlements and more than 45,500 at-risk people in minutes, a task that would normally take weeks. The system also helped model potential spread into uninfected areas.
Why it matters
Faster mapping and forecasting gives responders more time to deploy mobile laboratories, coordinate border surveillance and direct resources toward vulnerable communities before outbreaks expand.
