India Launches World Bank AI Report, Highlighting Development-Focused Adoption
India launched the World Bank’s 2026 report on using artificial intelligence for development in emerging economies.
What happened
Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw launched the World Bank Group’s World Development Report 2026 in New Delhi. The report urges developing economies to adopt, adapt and scale AI rather than build costly advanced systems from scratch, while strengthening electricity, connectivity, computing, data, skills and institutions. Vaishnaw cited Indian applications that reportedly lifted sugarcane yields 40% and cut water and fertiliser use 30%.
Why it matters
The report positions AI adoption—not frontier-model construction—as the practical priority for developing economies, with infrastructure, skills and institutions determining whether businesses and citizens gain.
