Solar Orbiter Traces Magnetic Switchback to the Sun’s Surface
ESA-led Solar Orbiter has linked a solar-wind magnetic switchback to its origin on the Sun’s surface.
What happened
The European Space Agency-led Solar Orbiter spacecraft flew through an S-shaped kink, or switchback, in the solar wind’s magnetic field. By analysing the particles inside it, researchers traced the structure back to the Sun’s surface. The finding provides new information about solar magnetism, which drives dangerous solar storms.
Why it matters
Tracing switchbacks to the Sun’s surface gives researchers a clearer view of solar magnetism and the processes behind dangerous solar storms.
