ESA and IAU Centre Join Forces to Protect Dark, Quiet Skies
ESA and the IAU’s dark-sky centre signed an agreement to develop technical solutions for satellite impacts.
What happened
The European Space Agency and the International Astronomical Union’s Centre for the Protection of the Dark and Quiet Sky signed an agreement at the International Astronautical Congress. They will strengthen cooperation and develop technical solutions addressing reflected satellite light and radio-frequency interference, which increasingly challenge professional astronomy and stargazing as satellite numbers grow.
Why it matters
The agreement targets two growing effects of expanding satellite activity: light pollution and radio interference that can disrupt astronomical observation and alter access to dark skies.
